Hey, I decided to go and check out the anime convention around my city (Anime Evolution) for the first time. I've never been to one. Can I get some tips, advice or comments about what it's like? What do you actually do there?
I hear most of the people cosplay... but my decision to go is a little last minute. I thought that maybe I could somehow pull off a last minute generic gothic costume... or should I just not bother (I don't want to go out in a crappy costume lol)?

First, I just want to say that your decision is a great one. Anime conventions are awesome! I have personally never been to Anime Evolution, but I've been to Anime North, so... close enough!

Okay, so the main atractions consist of cosplay/people, dealers room, artist alley, and various panels.

First, the people. Everywhere. They all have costumes. All of them! Some suck and you get to laugh at them, while others are amazing and you get pictures with them The people are always really nice too, and if you talk to them it's really easy to make friends. This is one reason you should totally cosplay. My friends and I went for our first year in cosplay except for one girl because she thought it was too dorky. By the end of the weekend she was insanely mad at herself for not having something. And it's a ton of fun when someone asks for your picture for the first time! Man, I'll never forget that moment Also, if you cosplay, you can find other people from the same anime/game you're from and that's a way to make quick friends.

Next, dealers room. Big room. Manga. Anime. Posters. Action figures. Ect. Ect. Ect. ... it's like the perfect mall... it's amazing!

Artist alley. I'm an artist so this place was godly, but even if you don't draw/paint/whatever, its still awesome. All of these aveage fans have all these big tables. Tables full of art. Pretty art. Art you can buy and tape to your locker and bedroom wall. Plus the people are really cool too! You can even get them to sign your stuff if you really want to Just ask nice.

And finally, the panels. The con will have a schedule on thier site you can check out. These have lists of a ton of panels, which is just like big discussions that volunteeres run. It's on animes, mangas, consepts, art... pretty much anything and everything. It's kinda hard to get to these since you have to be there at a certain time, but that's why you plan these things out before going. Like for me, the skits are a must see. Random anime skits put on by other con attendees? Awesome! Most of them are amazingly funny! Last year I saw this amazing Bayblade one! Wait... oh, here you go!

(removed)

Watch it. Though the tape is nothing like being there, you still get the picture.

Well, yeah... I think I've gotten all the important parts down So yes, my conusion. Go. Cosplay. Have fun with friends. Make new friends. Take a camera. See everthing. Buy everything. Go back next year! That's pretty much all there is to it Hope this helped you out!

`Sadly, I only attend one convention a year ( Youmacon up here in Michigan ).

What is it like? Its absolute chaos! The nicest thing is that there's so many people to relate to and conversation is never short or lacking in supply since everyone there is a general otaku ( or was been forced to come along with otaku friends ).

Cosplay itself has so many levels. Some take their cosplay really, really seriously and others just run out to FYE, buy a Naruto jacket, put on a blonde wig, throw in a orange jump suit, and call themselves in cosplay! Its really all up to you how far you want to take it. Once you're there though, the rush will probably destroy any fears of your cosplay not being good enough. There is always someone worse!

My biggest piece of advice is to make time for rest and take care of yourself. So many people tend to not sleep at all and wind up sick as hell after the convention. Others forget to eat with all the excitement around. Above all else, remember that showers are our friends and you should encourage others with you to shower too. It sounds ridiculous but otaku-funk is quite a crisis.

You'll have a blast though and once you go, you're hooked. Its an experience worth having!
