Brainstorming Nerd Passions Promotion Ideas

We are spending 100% of our time programming, so the only promotion of the site is via links from other sites (and word of mouth by members).

We thought we should open a thread asking members to come up with creative (dirt cheap) promotion ideas. Since we are completely free, we don't expect to do paid advertising any time soon, although we may try some down the road.

In the meantime, if you feel creative, post whatever you come up with.

How about some sort of incentive for users to spread the word online (forums/mmorpgs)?

`We could try making some signiture banners that members can put on their signatures for other forums they are a part of. I wouldn't mind making one. Anyone else?

`I think the fact that the site is free would be incentive enough for people.
But OKCupid has a bunch of user created quizzes that members can take and post their results on their profile. I always thought that helped add another layer of getting to know a person better. Should work great on a nerd site:)

the test/quiz idea is really great. might help to get something going in the community... trivia stuff is always a great attraction to people like us!
let's face it most of us really are looking for new friends first.... all else is gravy!

I will be launching- relaunching a geek/nerd site in mexico in the next few months. will be all in spanish, but will link to here - a lot of the old users were bi-lingual at a minimum.

`I think that sometimes people are wary of posting in very quiet forums. It's horrible when you start a thread that doesn't get replied to.

Perhaps if admin started a few interesting threads, where people could really debate (or argue! about the topic, it would encourage more people to post on them, and to start their own.

Also, I'm not much of a 'techy' but is there anything that could be changed or removed to make the site a little faster? It takes forever to load anything, and sometimes I know I'm guilty of just clicking to another site. I hate waiting :)
