Just to be controversial, I think it would be a GOOD thing if the US governement were to run a *safe* domain on the internet.
There's already a .us top level domain - not well used. What if the government set up a structure where companies had to be certified to have a site in .us, and when you went there you would KNOW there was no p0rn or gambling or cosmetic p@nis surgery - and no credit card fraud either.
Not to take away anyones freedom to be a sleeze or rip people off on the REST of the net. just create a safe haven for the 90% of the population that thinks the *old* internet is a cesspool and sucks b@lls |

hmmm... I have a hard time thinking that that won't completely snowball into a socialist save-the-1nt3rw3b movement. I smell a conspiracy to control free-media. Sorry guy not feeling it.
On that note; have you heard the crazy theory about a collection of virus/spyware creators collaberating on crashing the micor-soft servers that hold up the net? As the idea goes; aparently their are corperate virus designers that are working to crash the servers so that microsoft/and/or other corperate entitys, can launch the "internet 2".
Of course that would be ruled by governing body's such as the united states but also corperations. scary. However unlikely it sounds - I work tech support so I know as I was working that day - last summer, mid august symantec system works found a virus that was irradicating the base servers and crashing EVERYONE. It was so bad that of the 42 servers that hold up most of the interenet, 23 were effeted by it. ABout the only people not having that trouble; mac users. no duh. So my point is; its totaly possible.
The internet is free for a reason. Changing it only propigates the problem. |

I'm with Rubixx on this one. It's one of the main reasons I'm a huge supporter of Net Neutrality. I mean, if you have such strong feelings about the soft white underbelly of the internet, you can stay away from those sites yourself, or simply not use the internet. I know that's an over-simplified way of looking at things, but a lot of times, solutions in life can really be that simple.
Sure, there are a lot of scumbags out there on the internet, and a lot of bad stuff, but you're an adult. If you don't like it, don't look at it, and take precautions in your dealings on the internet. Use common sense. Never give out sensitive information, and read up on internet safety. If you think the person you're dealing with is of ill-repute, do some research. Google rocks.
Oh well, I don't need to write a novel here. You get my point.
"The multiplying villainies of nature do swarm upon him. And fortune on his damned quarrel smiling, showed like a rebel's whore. But all's too weak: for brave MacBeth -well he deserves that name- disdaining fortune with his brandish'd steel, which smoked with execution. Like valor's minion, carved out his path, 'til he fac'd the slave, which he ne'er shook hands with, nor bade farewell to." |

Ok heres my two peneth anyway. i dont like the idea of anyone controlling the internet either. but to say your an adult and just stear clear. Ok but its not all adults on the web. Over here (uk) computers are seen as "the future", my mom used to work in a library where they could get funding for computers, but not books, WTF? So anyway, kids are pushed towards the internet as a solution to all problems, in a "answers will be on the internet cos, hey, its technology and therefor good" kinda way. And we wonder why they come across ---- and scumbags.
Kids come to this with maybe not as much common sense as you have.
