What is a nerd? Nerd is one of those words I feel that people will assert there is nothing wrong with being one, but at the same time people don't necessarily willingly call themselves nerds. I feel a nerd is someone who has a deep interest or passion for something that is not "mainstream". This can be anything from an obscure sport to comics to video games to knitting to B horror movies. Anything that the general public might not necessarily be interested in. It can imply intelligence but it doesn't always. It can also imply isolation and social awkwardness but that isn't really true either. It tends to refer to someone who is often more comfortable relaxing at home and reading on a Friday night than going out, something that baffles the generally extroverted crowd. How it all applies to me is that it is, simply, who I am. I greatly enjoy comics and video games and other obscure things and would enjoy them even if I was the only one on the planet who did. I am pretty introverted, though not to the point where I am incapable of going outside and doing my job, and honestly stay inside most of the time because it is where I relax, not out of anxiety or fear of how society will judge me. In the end, being a nerd isn't something I try to be or even really choose to be, it is just a part of my identity and it makes me proud. I'm not sure if any of that made sense as I kind of was just spewing out thoughts as they came along, but that's just what comes to mind when I hear that word.
