I've spent some time working on Nerd vs Geek, and here is what I have. (Just my opinion.) Technically, Geeks are circus side show performers who eat anything for pay. When kids feel ostracized, the nerds keep struggling, the geeks found that notoriety was almost as good as acceptance. So they did shocking things to get what they wanted. They often grow to reject normalcy outright.
As a Nerd, I dont reject normality, but wont abandon my individuality, either.
