"I used to be with in, but then they changed what it was." I'm only just realizing that I'm a nerd—the very specialized-and-obsessive interest kind of nerd. Or maybe I’m a geek? I'm not really sure. I think my tastes are pretty ordinary, but it's surprising difficult to find somebody who can discuss The Prisoner (the original series), Edith Wharton, and feudal Japanese history over pints. And, in general, I prefer classic fiction to post-modern, classical music to jazz, and painting to contemporary conceptual art. I can talk Star Trek, too. Again, that all seems to suggest I'm a nerd or geek (I'm not a snob), plus I love zombie movies and frequently worry that my apartment cannot be adequately fortified for the zombie apocalypse. I guess it doesn't matter though—like Shaun, I'll be headed to the pub.

I never leave home without a book and one of my greatest fears is being stuck on an airplane without one (is that nerdy or just neurotic?). I watch a few TV programs, but only online or on DVD. I’m thoroughly uninterested in celebrity gossip and dislike reality TV.

As for the obsessive, specialized interests, in addition to the above, I’m totally obsessed and passionate about aikido. I practice and/or teach 5 or more days per week and I run two youth programs. I often work with children in special education programs (the disabled and disenfranchised). I also play classical guitar. I practice almost every morning and occasional perform. Mostly, I like playing for my friends and family.

Now I don’t expect or even necessarily want to a woman with all these same interests. I’d be ecstatic to meet someone who could keep up and contribute her own thoughts and interests to the sample random conversation described above. Mostly, though, I’d like to meet a woman with a brain—the kind a zombie could feast on. A woman who reads books, has a passionate interest, can watch gory horror movies without flinching, and who can hold her liquor.
