H.P. Lovecraft is one of my favorite authors, but he didn't actually write a book. His work consists of short stories, most of which correlate to each other in a series called the Cthulhu Mythos. The Mythos centers around the Great Old Ones, ancient powerful deities who came from outer space and once ruled the Earth.
I also love the independent short stories of Ray Bradbury, including:
A Sound of Thunder (about time travel and the butterfly effect)
The Veldt (which I don't even know how to describe other than freaky)
All Summer in a Day (about a special day for children living on Venus)
Marionettes, Inc. (about humanoid robots and love)
There will Come Soft Rains (about an abandoned smart house after a nuclear war)

`I love short stories. Anthologies to be more precise . Adore Lovecraft as well. I assume you've read Asimov as well? When I was a kid, I had a book that had short stories about Merlin. Loved that thing.

`My favorite short story collections are the Science Fiction Hall of Fame, The World Treasury of Science Fiction, and The Science Fiction Century. All of them have their clunkers, but they're mostly gems, and the best gems are among the best stories I've ever read.
Also, my favorite short story author is Philip K. d---. Just about every one of his stories is wonderful.
