A series I really like that I don't think I've seen mentioned here yet:

The Abhorsen series by Garth Nix. It's a series of three books about necromancers basically. It takes place in this strange world that's split into one half being like the one we know, and the other half being run by magic.

`The Abhorsen series is actually one of my favourites. I'm usually not a fan of book series, the only others I've read have been those of dear Mr Douglas Adams.

I found Nix's interpretation of necromancy very interesting (the way the dead hands, aka zombies, were repossessed corpses rather than reanimated corpses). It makes more sense than most zombie type stories.
