A nerd had two defining characteristics: geek and I.Q.
Geeks are people fascinated by technology, science-fiction & fantasy, Video games & comic books and other things that will make them socially unpopular to the rest of society.
But the Nerds have one very important extra that the geeks don't : their I.Q. is the primary thing that sets them apart. They are very intelligent, usually go to College or University and are usually doing all the work while the common folks watch sports.
They make friends with geeks with whom they have the more affinities.
